About
Sterling Grissom is a North Carolina-based photographer focusing on artistic and commercial forms of photography. His photographic work is based on digital photography and the manipulation and freedom that digital photography provides for creative freedoms. His creative and artistic work focuses on a wide variety of issues, specifically in reference to the discovery of the inner self and the harsh realities of humans’ social wellbeing. His work, primarily portraiture.
Sterling is inspired by the ever-changing United States of America political shifts. Everything can be traced back to politics. Politics equals social wellbeing. However, this is just his inspiration. His background in Social Work has allowed him to view his work from a biopsychosocial model and trauma-focused intervention, where he focuses on how an event in life has impacted people not just mentally, but physically, emotionally, and socially. In his photographic print series, “I Forgot That You Existed”, he dives into the series based on a reflection of himself. How have events shaped him and how does trauma impact someone? The mirror, a symbol of reflection.
Sterling is inspired by social topics like gender identity, effects of trauma, mental health, body image concerns, environmental impacts, and the power of portraiture as a social catalyst. Sterling’s work has been featured in a recent publication, the Photographers Forum “BestCollege and High School Photographers” (2018) book. His work has also been featured in an exhibition, N.C. Art Council Student Art Show (2015). Sterling’s current objective is to promote social change through the art of photography and portraiture.
